AgressionThere are different reasons why a person may bit aggressively towards other human beings. The person may do this way because of his culture or the way he was brought up in society. The person does not, however, act this way based on instinct alone. Aggression is a molded, learned behavior. A human being must have both environmental and instinctual factors in order to display aggression. Some of a persons natural instincts are to desire food, reject certain things, escape from danger, fight when challenged, sex desire, care for the young, dominate, and to accept inferior status. The combination of instincts and environment determines a persons behavior. This is based on the possibleness that everything human beings do would have to be learned from other human beings. Aggression must be learned it is not simply there from birth. rather than being an uncontrollable instinct, a persons behavior is something that is taught to him. For example, a newborn baby is breathing bec ause it is an involuntary reflex. On the other hand, a father may rank his young son to beat up the school bully who is picking on him. As a result, the boy is taught to deal with the situation by victimisation violence. In order for an individual to display aggression, it must be driven by an instinct interacting with that persons surroundings. McDougall defines the word instinct as an inherited or immanent psycho-physical disposition which determines its possessor to perceive, and to pay attention to, objects of a certain class, to experience an emotional excitement of a particular quality upon perceiving such an object, and to act in regard to its particular manner, or, at least, to experience an impulse to such action. This definition basically explains that people have different reactions for different stimuli. Therefore, an individual is prone to act a certain way when he is stimulated to do so from his surrounding environment. For example, the Eskimo does not have an innat e instinct that allows him to survive in his climate. He is taught to work with his people in order to survive when he is very young. When people are brought up in a society, they learn certain custom and traditions. These customs are usually taught to them because its part of their societys way of life, even though some of the customs may seem cruel and repulsive to others. For example, cannibalism is abhorrent to us, only in some primitive cultures, to eat an enemy is to gain his or her strength.

Fyodor Dostoyevskys The House of the DeadFyodor Mikhaylovich Dostoyevsky was born in Moscow on Nov. 11, 1825. Ashis father was a former military surgeon, Dostoyevsky grew up in the noble class.He entered the military engineering school at St. Petersburg at age 16.Shortly after graduating, he resigned his commission and devoted every last(predicate) his timeto writing. However, he soon became caught up in the movement for politicaland social reform during the reign of Tsar Nicholas I. He began to participatein hebdomadally discussions about the ideas of French utopian Socialists. ThisPetrashevsky Circle was arrested in April 1849. After a long investigation,Dostoyevsky, along with 20 other members of the Circle, were condemned to beshot. Literally moments before his effect was to occur, his sentence wascommuted to quartette years hard labor in Omsk, Siberia. He accepted his punishmentand began to regard many of the simple convicts as extraordinary people.During his sentence, he be came devoted to Orthodox Christianity.The House of the Dead was initially published in Russia, 1860. Uponinitial examination of the work, it appears to be a stream of consciousnessaccount of Dostoyevskys four years in a Siberian prison camp. But, uponfurther review, it seems to be more an account of Dostoyevskys personality andattitudes through these years. In his first year in prison, Dostoyevsky foundmyself hating these fellow-sufferers of mine. (305) His first day in prison,several convicts approached him, a member of the noble class and no doubt verywealthy in the convicts eyes, and asked him for cash four times each andeach refusal seemed to bring more convicts. He quickly grew to spite thesepeople, for they thought him to be an idiot, unable to remember that the very kindred convict had approached him for mvirtuosoy not fifteen minutes earlier. (67-8)But, Dostoyevsky makes a startling realization at the end of this first year, adiscovery which allows him to drastically demas culinize his personality ...theconvicts lived here not as if this were their home, but as some wayside inn, enroute somewhere. (303) this concept is followed by Dostoyevskys realizationthat he wanted, foreign many other convicts in the camp, to live as he didbefore his imprisonment. He believed that Physical, no less moral strength isrequired for penal servitude if one is to survive all the materiel deprivationsof that accursed existence. An Overview of Electra   Euripides play Electra, produced in 415 b.c.e., starts with a peasant recounting past events Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus murdered Agamemnon and took the throne of Mycenae. Agamemnons son Orestes escaped and has been raised in Phocis. Daughter Electra, when marriageable, was forced to wed this peasant instead of any noble, whereby Aegisthus rule might be endangered. The marriage has not been consummated. If any man thinks me a fool, for harbouring / A young girl in my house and never touching her, / He measures whats right by the wretched standard of / His own mind (107).   Electra doesnt mind work so long as she can grouse about her mother. Orestes and his friend Pylades arrive. Orestes has been sent by Apollos oracle to avenge his fathers murder. He and Electra, who doesnt recognize him, exchange stories, Electra bring out that Aegisthus when hes drunk, so people say, / Jumps on the grave, or flings stones at my fathers name / Inscribed there (116) and acts paranoid about Orestes. With the help of an old one-time servant to Agamemnon and a satisfied scar, Orestes identity is revealed to Electra. The siblings conspire.   Orestes pretends to join Aegisthus in an animal sacrifice but murders the usurper and wins over the kings guards to his side. He parades the severed head to Electra, who is elated but not sated. Orestes balks at the idea of killing Clytemnestra, their mother. Electra sends word that she has given birth. Clytemnestra visits and does a rather convincing job of explaining her side to all the famous events, particularly her wrath at Agamemnon for tricking their girl Iphigenia to her sacrificial death before the Trojan War. She was also less than pleased that Agamemnon brought back Cassandra as his new slave toy. The Chorus is characteristically idiotic Your wrangling are just yet in your justice there remains / Something repellent. A wife ought in all things to accept / Her husbands judgement, i f she is wise. Those who will not / Admit this, choke outside my scope of argument (141). Electra aligns Clytemnestra with her sister Helen. She accuses her mother of primping before the mirror long before Agamemnons crimes, obviously for someone else. And Electra claims Clytemnestras rationalizations do not contend the persecution of Orestes and herself. Clytemnestra accepts that Electra favors her father, but as to this business of the new baby?

College students should be required to complete a year of fellowship service/volunteer work before they can graduate, in order to force mature and caring adults and versatile future leaders. By mandating all College students across the United States of America to add another year to their studies and use this year for partnership service/volunteer work only, we will be able to increase their knowledge of community need, civic responsibility, and allow them the opportunity to gain experience and skills applicable to their future.The recent global financial downturn has greatly increased the dire need for volunteers throughout all levels of society. Also, this recession unmasked the re ality of not only our incumbent social economic environment, but also revealed the importance of continuing to educate all members of our society as to the importance of community outreach through volunteerism many of these grass-roots, non-for-profit organizations suffered a detrimental blow to their budgets with the vast reduction of corporate contributions to offset their daily operational cost. These organizations not only rely on economic support, but they heavy depend and count on the continual hands on involvement of their volunteers. In addition to the vast reduction of financial resources, these organizations had drastic cuts in services, community outreach and employment opportunities, which had a severe and direct impact on our society. Although college students have typically undergone 16 years of academic schooling, not all have had sixteen years of life lessons and character growth. Volunteering is not only beneficial to the community or organization, but also to the individual partaking in the activity. Volunteering gives you an opportunity to change peoples lives, including your own (Volunteering).
